Afghan soldiers march in parade.SOLDIERS heading for Afghanistan will parade in Wrexham on Saturday as part of the Comrades' Weekend celebrations. The 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh The Royal Welsh (Welsh Y Cymry Brenhinol) was formed on St David's Day, 1 March 2006. It is one of the new large infantry regiments of the British Army, and the regiment's formation was announced on 16 December 2004 by Geoff Hoon and General Sir Mike Jackson as part of will march from Hightown Barracks to The Green to be inspected by the mayor. Then after, a service to be held in St Giles Church where a candle will be lit for the battalion that will burn throughout the period of their deployment to Afghanistan. A number of stands will be set up displaying some of the equipment the soldiers will use, including the new Jackal and a Warrior armoured-fighting vehicle. The parade will also see former members of the regiment meet serving soldiers. Up to 250 troops will be taking part and will be accompanied by the Mass Corps of Drums. The parade will leave Hightown Barracks at 2pm and arrive for inspection at 2.30pm on Llwyn Isaf Llwyn Isaf is a green in the centre of Wrexham. It is surrounded on two sides by the town's Guildhall and on another by the Library Arts Centre. The green is most popular with students from the nearby Yale College.
