Affymetrix Licenses Pangea's Computational Tools for Use in Chip Design.

OAKLAND, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 17, 1999--

Pangea Systems(R), Inc. today announced that Affymetrix Inc. (Nasdaq:AFFX), of Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
has licensed state-of-the-art computational tools from Pangea Systems for use in DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.

 array design efforts.

Pangea's proprietary scientific computational tools allow a rapid and accurate clustering and alignment of Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) and full length sequences, along with the ability to integrate data from public and proprietary databases. Financial terms of the multi-year license are undisclosed.

Affymetrix' customers study the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously utilizing the Affymetrix GeneChip(R) system. Pangea's clustering and alignment tools reduce the design time for GeneChip arrays.

"We are pleased to gain access to Pangea's state of the art clustering and alignment tools. These tools have the potential to help us enhance the quality and reduce the design time for new commercial oligonucleotide arrays," said David Balaban, Senior Director of Bioinformatics and Information Systems of Affymetrix.

"We are delighted to have Affymetrix join the growing number of life science companies that are making Pangea's EST EST electroshock therapy.
