Affordable hotels in GreeceExplore some offbeat destinations in Greece this summer by planning a trip to villages where various sites and buildings have been preserved for their architectural significance. The March issue of Conde Nast traveler magazine features some of these places, and recommends affordable hotels nearby. On the Greek island of Chios, you'll find a monastery called Nea Moni, that is a World Heritage site famed for its mosaics. In another village, Mesta, there is a medieval pedestrian maze of arcaded streets. Here you can stay in one of four rooms at Anna Floradis for just $45, and dine nearby at Taverna Mesaionas. Others places recommended by the magazine include the Castro Hotel, located atop a 16th century castle in Folegandros; the Pyrgos Kapetanakou in Areopoli on the Mani Peninsula; the Topali Mansion in the hilltop village of Makrinitsa; the Zoe-Aegeas in Oia, on Santorini; and the Papaevagelou Guest House in Megalo Papingo in the Zagori region. While you're in Zagori, try hiking the 10-mile Vikos Gorge, starting at either Megalo Papingo in the north or Monodendri in the south.
