The system allows RESPONSE operators to answer calls and retrieve the precise GPS position from wireless telematics subscribers. It also allows for the delivery of customized services such as: roadside assistance, emergency assistance, request for points of interest information, requests for directions and routing, request for concierge services, and enrollment and customer care functions.

Developed by Aether, to RESPONSE specifications, the system is designed to support multiple call centers and will advance AAA's telematics strategy to provide members and other travelers with ever more convenient and useful access to AAA products and services.

The development of a telematics call center system allows RESPONSE to integrate a range of technology components, including a Voice over IP system, GIS (1) (Geographic Information System) An information system that deals with spatial information. Often called "mapping software," it links attributes and characteristics of an area to its geographic location.  mapping servers, database and web servers.

Currently a field test for 200 participants, among them AAA member clubs and RESPONSE employees, is being conducted in 11 major metropolitan areas, including Baltimore Baltimore, city (1990 pop. 736,014), N central Md., surrounded by but politically independent of Baltimore co., on the Patapsco River estuary, an arm of Chesapeake Bay; inc. 1745. , Detroit Detroit, city, United States

The test is utilizing a variety of wireless carriers, air interface technologies, and wireless phone types. Services are being delivered from RESPONSE's Columbia, Md. facility.

"We believe Aether's architecture will play a role in the development of future services that we may want to offer to our subscribers."

"Aether views telematics as an important growth area and our role in helping to develop the RESPONSE call center builds upon the Aether corporate mission to provide a wide range of wireless data solutions for the transportation and logistics industry," said Bill Hannon, Vice President for Transportation and Logistics, Aether Systems.
