Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AETH), a leading provider of wireless data products and services, today announced that it has designed and implemented a news gateway, a wireless link to local news sources across the country, for the Newspaper Association of America The Newspaper Association of America is a United States trade association that represents the country's largest daily newspapers and provides services including market research, technology education and support, minority hiring and representing publishers in Washington, D.C.  (NAA NAA

Aether partnered with NAA to build the gateway to help newspapers explore how mobile users access wireless content. Through its engineering services, Aether designed the gateway to allow mobile device users to access wireless newspaper editions via a simple search screen.

Using a browser-based phone, Palm handheld or Pocket PC device, users type in the first few letters of a city, state or newspaper name, and are connected either to the available wireless newspaper services from that location, or to a newspaper's auditotex phone number, which can also be dialed direct.

The user will be directed to the closest edition available if no wireless newspaper exists in the search area.

The gateway is driven by an extensive database of digital newspaper links maintained by NAA. During a six-month trial of the gateway, focus groups in Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis and Seattle will explore uses of the gateway. Verizon Wireless Cellco Partnership, doing business as Verizon Wireless, owns and operates the second largest wireless telecommunications network in the United States, based on total wireless customers.  will be the directory's initial carrier partner throughout the trial period and its customers will have one-click access to the Local News Gateway.

Access will also be available to any user with a wireless device by downloading downloading - download  a Palm Query application from www.naa.org/edge/wireless.html. Phone users may access the gateway by typing www.lngaate.com into their phone browsers.

to be a part of NAA's initiative to explore how newspapers will provide wireless access to their readers, this is a very exciting step for the newspaper industry," said Tom Lupica, senior vice president, Wireless Services, Aether Systems. "This gateway will offer a unique tool essential to help establish wireless newspaper content, a central index for users to access content from multiple newspapers."

"With the launch of this gateway, the newspaper industry has tackled the next frontier in information delivery. Now any newspaper that creates a wireless edition may now be accessed from a single site," said NAA President and Chief Executive Officer John F. Strum.

"As they proved with the success of their online offerings, newspapers are demonstrating their ability to get relevant, timely and local news to readers. No matter the means of delivery, newspapers provide the content people seek."
