 Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AETH) today announced a new initiative to develop and host secure business Internet applications for smart phones and other handheld devices using the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

The company's new "WAP Enterprise Center" will be a key part of Aether's newly expanded network operations and customer care facility, located at their headquarters in Owings Mills, Md.

The first of its kind in the wireless industry, the Center will allow corporate enterprises and content providers to adopt Web-based wireless phones as another option for extending Internet, intranet and in-house data to wireless devices.

"Our new WAP Enterprise Center builds on our strength as the leading provider of wireless data systems and services for businesses," said President and Chief Executive Officer David Oros. "This helps to push the WAP standard for smart phones into the business market and gives our customers a broader range of device choices."

In addition to supporting WAP-based appliances, Aether develops, hosts, deploys and supports enterprise applications for Palm computing devices, two-way paging systems including the RIM 950 and Windows CE (Windows Consumer Electronics) Microsoft's version of Windows for handheld devices and embedded systems that use x86, ARM, MIPS and SHx CPUs. Windows CE .NET superseded Windows CE 3.0.  computers

WAP is a cellular-industry standard for transmitting small amounts of text data from Web sites over wireless phones. Industry research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that 525 million WAP phones WAP phone ntelĂ©fono WAP  will be shipped in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. WAP phones, which are just beginning to appear on the market, bring a number of Web-based services to wireless handsets, including stock quotes, phone listings, flight information and horoscopes.

While most WAP services currently target the general consumer market, businesses are exploring the potential of WAP-based phones to send and receive internal data useful to their mobile workforces, such as customer account information, inventory updates and order entry. Enterprises, however, have more extensive development, hosting, security and user-control requirements for WAP, as well as a need for high-level end-user support. Aether's WAP enterprise initiative is designed to meet those needs.

The new Aether WAP Enterprise Center will help enterprises get the most from WAP technology by offering:
- The industry's most experienced team of wireless data software
     developers, dedicated to creating compelling customized WAP-based
     applications and solutions;

-    Secure hosting of enterprise applications on WAP gateway servers;

- Seamless connections to multiple carriers' networks, allowing the
     broadest possible geographic wireless coverage;

- Aether's full range of end-user customer service, technical
     support and device provisioning capabilities;

- The ability for end users to also receive content and services
     from a broad array of other devices and networks;

- The highest level of security and reliability inside Aether's
     network operations center, including virtual private high-speed
     data links to wireless carriers; and

- Protection from technology obsolescence, as Aether adapts to
     current and future development environments and device operating
     systems for WAP and other protocols.

Aether's WAP enterprise initiative will be open to all wireless carriers, equipment vendors, content providers and enterprise customers who want access to a total WAP solution. The company expects to announce further details regarding WAP Enterprise Center partners and customers in the coming days and weeks.
