Aestiva First Out With Operating System for the Web.

Business Editors

TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 2000

You would think that the dominance of operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
companies such as Microsoft and Apple Computer would leave little room for innovative new operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. , but Aestiva, a newcomer to the operating system arena, has announced a new kind of operating system -- a Web operating system (1) An operating system that runs in a server on the Web.

(2) The environment created in a user's machine from an online application stored on the Web and run through a Web browser.
.

Aestiva's operating system doesn't strictly compete with hardware operating systems such as Windows, Mac or Linux since it actually works along side them. But its focus on the Web makes it the only operating system made for the World Wide Web.

"All applications developed with Aestiva are Web-based," said Aestiva's director of Technology, D.M. Silverberg.

Development is done with HTML HTML
 in full HyperText Markup Language

Markup language derived from SGML that is used to prepare hypertext documents. Relatively easy for nonprogrammers to master, HTML is the language used for documents on the World Wide Web.
, the "Hypertext Markup Language (hypertext, World-Wide Web, standard) Hypertext Markup Language - (HTML) A hypertext document format used on the World-Wide Web. HTML is built on top of SGML. "Tags" are embedded in the text. A tag consists of a "<", a "directive" (in lower case), zero or more parameters and a ">". " documents which form the basis for all Web sites. This kind of focus on the Web cannot be accomplished with conventional operating systems since they are hardware-centric, not Web-centric.

The fruits of Aestiva's Web-centric technology are nothing short of remarkable. Developers using Aestiva can create commerce sites in hours compared with months of development using conventional methods.

One measure of complexity, the number of lines of software code needed to create a Web site, tells a more compelling story. Whereas most commerce applications take about 5,000 lines of software code, comparable applications written in Aestiva's Web-centric operating system take only about 50 lines of software code.

Aestiva's OS has a following. It is already being used at thousands of company Web sites and is installed at hundreds of hosting providers and on company servers, extranets and intranets.

Aestiva's popularity is strongest among professional Web designers who build Web sites for a living. Aestiva gives Web designers the ability to deliver more advanced sites for their customers and extend their offerings.

The trend in the industry is toward more dynamic Web sites. This sits well with Aestiva since its OS is particularly suited to these kinds of sites.

"The more complex the Web site the better suited Aestiva is for the job," stated Silverberg.

Charles Cangialosi, vice president of Electronic Communications at Cooper Leder Marketing, a well-known New York-based advertising firm, agrees: "We build, host and maintain Web sites for very high-profile e-commerce clients, and we rely on the Aestiva operating system."

More design firms are following suit. Fully half of Aestiva's customers are Web design firms. Most recognize the importance of the World Wide Web and believe that computing computing - computer  will shift toward the Web. If that's the case, as the maker of the first and only OS made for the Web, Aestiva is well-positioned.

Aestiva HTML/OS is available for Sun, SGI-IRIX, BSDI BSDI - Berkeley Software Design, Inc. , FreeBSD, Linux, Cobalt RaQ The Cobalt RaQ is a 1U rackmount server product line developed by Cobalt Networks, Inc. (later purchased by Sun Microsystems) featuring a modified Red Hat Linux operating system and a proprietary GUI for server management. , Windows, MacOS 7-9 and MacOS X platforms. Aestiva HTML/OS retails for $799.99 (US). Upgrades are $150.00 (US).
