Following the Smith brothers 1919 flight (story, P. 44), Shell went on to pioneer refueling points along the England-Australia route, work ing with Imperial Airways Imperial Airways was the early British commercial long range air transport company, operating from 1924 to 1939 and served parts of Europe but especially the Empire routes to South Africa, India and the Far East including Australia and New Zealand with local partnership companies e. and Qantas. Early on, the firm operated its own aircraft to inspect remote stations.
