Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 2003

Aegis Semiconductor, an emerging leader in dynamic optical components and subsystems, today announced the promotion of Gary Ainsworth to Vice President, Operations. In this role, Ainsworth will be responsible for internal and external manufacturing, technical operations, and outsourcing.

Since joining Aegis in June 2002, Ainsworth has developed the company's manufacturing strategy and product deployment capability by driving the concepts of 'Design for Manufacturability and Test', and 'New Product Introduction Methodologies'. The implementation of these concepts has enabled Aegis to commercialize and ship tunable thin film filters quickly and cost effectively.

Ainsworth has more than 15 years of successful experience in process/product introduction and manufacturing programs. He has held senior management positions with Lasertron, Inc., and Quantum/Maxtor Corporation. At Lasertron, he led the commercialization of the company's breakthrough P180 980nm pump laser A laser used as the pump for an optical amplifier or other laser. See EDFA and laser. . At Quantum/Maxtor Corporation, Ainsworth introduced new process and test technologies for the Quantum/Maxtor ALTAS Server Class Disk Drives.

"Gary has brought significant experience to Aegis in high volume technical manufacturing as well as a deep knowledge of the components business," said Matthias Wagner Matthias Wagner (or Matze) is a German programmer who has created utilities for games made by Westwood Studios, Electronic Arts and Petroglyph. The mosquito OCM is based on the Aegis Active Thin Films(TM) technology platform, a combination of thin film semiconductor materials Semiconductor materials are insulators at absolute zero temperature that conduct electricity in a limited way at room temperature (see also Semiconductor). The defining property of a semiconductor material is that it can be doped with impurities that alter its electronic properties  with dielectric dielectric (dī'ĭlĕk`trĭk), material that does not conduct electricity readily, i.e., an insulator (see insulation). A good dielectric should also have other properties: It must resist breakdown under high voltages; it should not  optical coatings. With Active Thin Films, Aegis is able to deliver tunable components at the size, reliability and price of static components. The company showcased the hornet(TM) Tunable Optical Filter, also based on Active Thin Films, at the recent National Fiber Optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber  Engineering Conference. Aegis has more than 20 patents pending on the Active Thin Films processes, devices, and products.
