Adwatch: Edwards ad airing in Iowa goes after drug, insurance companies

TITLE: "Voice."

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: Iowa

SCRIPT: John Edwards: "I met a man named James Lowe who was born with a cleft palate. He had no voice for 50 years because with no health care he couldn't get a simple operation. Fifty years without a voice — in America. This is wrong. It is immoral. When are we going stop letting drug companies, insurance companies and their lobbyists run this country? America belongs to us. James Lowe finally got his voice, now it's time for yours. I'm John Edwards and I approve this message.

KEY IMAGES: The bulk of the ad consists of the Democratic presidential candidate seated in a chair speaking to the camera. There is a brief picture of James Lowe, the man mentioned in the ad.

ANALYSIS: Edwards talks frequently in his campaign of the existence of "Two Americas," one for the powerful and the other for everyone else. While the former North Carolina senator does not use the phrase in the ad, it exemplifies what he has vowed to change.

Not coincidentally, it deals with health care, an issue Iowa Democrats rank neck and neck with Iraq their top concerns in the presidential race, according to an AP-Pew poll conducted there last month. Unfortunately for Edwards, they think New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton would do the best job on the issue as president, by a two-to-one margin over both Edwards and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.
