Adventures of the puzzle squad.

Place: ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA

Time: JANUARY

Grab your coats! We're off to the St. Paul Winter Carnival in Minnesota. For two weeks, we'll see parades, treasure hunts, contests, and Ice carvings. But first, find these ten things:

* frozen fish

* Ice cube tray

* Eskimo's igloo

* mitten

* sled

* ski pole

* ice skates

* snowmobile

* skis

* sock

In the Beginning

To find out when the first winter carnival was held, look at the hot air balloons. Color the spaces that have dots in them. Find out how many blocks of ice were used to build the first ice palace by looking at the drums.

Send in the Clowns Boreas Rex, the symbolic king of winter, opens the festivities. But before the festival can begin, Boreas Rex and his queen must be crowned. Whoops, their crowns are missing! Find two hidden crowns.

Hidden Hankies

Anita and C.K. cheer on the parade with their Girl Scout troop. Their hand-decorated hankies spell out a message. Dugan is trying to figure it out. Use the vowels I, E, and O in any order to make words and uncode their messages.

Flying Flips

Every year the parade has a bouncing team. The bouncing team throws a girl into the air. She bounces and does flips on a blanket. To find out how many days the Carnival lasts, solve the blanket's math problem.

Fiery Finale

At the end of the carnival, a group of people led by a leader storms the ice palace with torches. They pretend to melt the castle. This means winter is over and spring is coming. To find out the leader's name, start with the red V on the blanket. Write all the other red letters on the blanks below. Now find and circle him in the picture.

Clue: He is dressed in red.

Puzzling Palace Maze

First, find your way through the castle's ice maze. Then go back and add up the numbers along the correct path. This will tell you how many blocks were used building the castle.

Race for the Gold

Help Anita win the race. Pick up consonants on each flag set up on both sides of the track. You'll find out what the carnival button says:

-- -- EA -- U -- E -- E -- A -- I -- IO --.

Ice Art

Every year there is a contest for the most artistic ice sculpture. C.K. made two. Connect the dots to see her ice sculptures.

Warming Words

Each year Minnesota Scout troops test their bravery by camping out t during the carnival. Ernest is joining them. They're doing this crossword puzzle to try to keep warm. Look for the numbered pictures on these pages. Then write the word for that picture on the crossword puzzle.
