Nine White Spruce Trees Will Help Restore Historic Landmark Vessels

Woodworker Jay McLaughlan and Assistant Chief Forester Bill Rivers will lead the project to select suitable trees to build booms, masts and gaffs for both ships as traditional spar-makers in Massachusetts have done for centuries.

"The approval to use state trees for the building of spars for the Adventure and Ernestina will enable us to continue to restore the ships in the most traditional fashion possible," said Marty Krugman, president, Gloucester Adventure, Inc. "Spars and rigging are the most visible, hands-on aspect of any educational or historic ship, and with these trees our master shipwrights will have the ability to craft the masts and booms with utmost care to the authenticity of the ships."

About Ernestina

The Schooner Ernestina is a one hundred year old ship designated as a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior. Originally built at the James and Tarr Yard in Essex, Massachusetts Essex is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, 26 miles north of Boston. The population was 3,267 at the 2000 census. Essex borders Hamilton to the west, Manchester-by-the-Sea to the south, Gloucester to the east, and Ipswich to the north.  and launched February 1, 1894, she has sailed on for the ensuing one hundred years to become one of six remaining Essex built schooners.

She has reached within 600 miles of the North Pole North Pole, northern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90°N. It is distinguished from the north magnetic pole. U.S. explorer Robert E. One of the last six surviving Gloucester dory The Gloucester dory is a variant of the Banks dory, a type of narrow-bottomed, slab-sided boat, common in the North Eastern United States. It is characteristically smaller and lighter, with less overhang, both bow and stern, and less freeboard.  fishing schooners, Adventure is an icon of the nation's fishing industry and a centerpiece of America's oldest fishing port. Adventure is a destination site on the Essex National Heritage Area Maritime Trail--the only national historic landmark vessel in Essex. It serves as a living memorial to the 10,000 Gloucester fishermen who perished at sea. Built in 1926, Adventure was the last American Dory Trawler fishing in the North Atlantic when she retired in 1953.
