Advantage City in battle to beat drop; SKY BLUES.Byline: Jim Brown
James Nathaniel Brown (born February 17, 1936) is an American former professional football player who has also made his mark as an actor and social activist. FOLLOWING last Saturday's 3-1 victory over Plymouth, Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Hillsborough took the pressure of the Sky Blues a little but I think it is going to be a nervewracking few weeks before the relegation issue is resolved It was City's first point at Hillsborough in five visits since they lost their Premiership place in 2001 and they have not won at their favourite ground of the 1980s since April 1999 when goals from Gary McAllister Gary McAllister MBE (born 25 December, 1964, in Newarthill, Motherwell) is a Scottish former professional footballer and manager. He began his playing career at Motherwell, scoring 8 goals in 70 appearances, until his fine performance in the 1985 Scottish Cup semi-final against (a penalty) and Noel Whelan Noel Whelan (born 30 December 1974) is an English professional footballer who is currently without a club. Biography Early career Born in Leeds, Whelan started off with home town team Leeds United, coming through the youth team with a number of other talented gave them a 2-1 win. That victory turned out to be City's last league away win for 14 months as they went through the whole season without winning on the road. The record at Sheffield's other ground Bramall Lane Bramall Lane Stadium is the home of Sheffield United Football Club in Sheffield, England and is the oldest major stadium in the world still to be hosting professional football matches. is little better with two draws and three defeats since the last win there in September 2001 when Laurent Delorge's league debut goal gave Roland Nilsson a winning start to his league managerial career. Nick Cook, a Coventry fan who lives near Sheffield, despairs of seeing Coventry win in the Steel City but thought we had broken the 10-game hoodoo until Richard Wood's late equaliser. Wood incidentally was on Coventry's Academy books as a young teenager. The draw did however extend City's unbeaten run (one win and three draws) to four games, equalling the best run since the start of the season when they were unbeaten for the first four games. Sadly the run of clean sheets at home went by the board against Plymouth and fell one game short of the all-time club record of seven set in 1959. Looking at the state of play at the bottom of the Championship, I am assuming that Colchester and Scunthorpe are too far adrift to avoid the drop and that there is just one relegation slot to fill. With so many teams involved in the race for the play-offs or the relegation battle there are few easy games and both Barnsley and the Saints have tough programmes. Having said that any team that can get two wins would probably be safe. CAPTION(S): SO NEAR .. . .City celebrate taking the lead at Hillsborough on Tuesday night but their joy was cut short by Wednesday's late equaliser |
