Advancis Pharmaceutical Corporation, a privately-held specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel anti-infective products, today announced that it is building a new company headquarters and research facility in Germantown, Maryland.

Advancis expects to employ more than 150 professionals to staff the facility, which represents an investment in property and equipment valued at more than $15 million, made possible in part through commitments by State of Maryland and Montgomery County agencies. The company expects to relocate its current staff of 50 employees to the new facility by June 2003.

 Corridor, the Germantown facility is a key step in Advancis' long-term business strategy to develop and bring to market a wide portfolio of new anti-infective drug therapies.

The building will encompass 62,000 square feet of office and research space in the Seneca Meadows Corporate Center, leased from Minkhoff Development Corporation. Advancis will initially outfit the building's research facilities with approximately $6 million in capital equipment.

The building will be financed by Allfirst Bank, The Maryland Industrial Financing Authority (MIDFA) and a grant from the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development. Montgomery County has worked to attract and promote promising biotechnology businesses since the 1980s.

Advancis expects to occupy over 80% percent of the Germantown facility by June 2003, with total occupancy and construction completed by 2004.

The architect team for the project is headed by William Gaudreau, Jr., of Gaudreau Inc., a Baltimore-based firm with almost 20 years of experience designing pharmaceutical laboratories, including labs for Celera Genomics and Human Genome Sciences Human Genome Sciences NASDAQ: HGSI is a biopharmaceutical corporation founded in 1992. Its stated purpose is to "discover, develop, manufacture and market innovative drugs that serve patients with unmet medical needs, with a primary focus on protein and antibody drugs.  in Montgomery County.

The contractor is Barclay White Skanska, Inc. of Rockville, Maryland Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. Peter Black, Scott Ensor and Hugh Giorgio of Allfirst Bank, Greg Cole and Beth Woodring of MIDFA, and David Edgerly and Henry Bernstein of the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development participated in securing Advancis' financing arrangements.
