) today announced that Advanced Signal has licensed the entire FLEX(tm) family of paging protocols and is already developing test equipment to meet the demands of the emerging Narrowband PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.  (NBPCS) market. An industry leader specializing in testing tools for synchronous high-speed paging systems, Advanced Signal has developed SIGNALpro(r), which provides signal and data analysis and channel management for the entire FLEX family of protocols as well as other currently available protocols.

The SIGNALpro allows users to characterize the outbound channel with bit error rate, code word error rate, and peak edge error measurements, accomplished by using a modified subscriber unit A Subscriber Unit, or SU is a broadband radio that is installed at a business or residential location to connect to an Access Point to send/receive high speed data wired or wirelessly. Devices commonly referred to as a Subscriber Unit include cable modems, mobile phones, etc.  as the audio input. SIGNALpro can also determine the effectiveness of two-way return channel receivers, for which Advanced Signal is already planning additional test functionality.

"SIGNALpro will provide our customers with the most real-world simulcast performance testing Performance Testing covers a broad range of engineering or functional evaluations where a material, product, or system is not specified by detailed material or component specifications: Rather, emphasis is on the final measurable performance characteristics.  available," said Steve Sandercock, president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

, Advanced Signal. "Licensing the FLEX family of technologies has allowed us to maintain our reputation for responding quickly to changing customer needs."

"Advanced Signal is part of a rapidly expanding group of test equipment, infrastructure, subscriber device and chip set manufacturers that have licensed FLEX technology and are incorporating it into their product offering," said John Steadman John Steadman (February 14, 1927-January 1, 2001) was an American sportswriter for The Baltimore Sun. Steadman was once a minor league baseball player, but decided to leave it in order to become a sportswriter. , vice president and director, licensing, acquisitions and strategic alliances, Motorola's Core Technologies and Systems Division. "Their commitment will do much to stimulate the growth of the messaging industry."

The FLEX family of protocols includes FLEX, the standard for high-speed paging adopted by 70 percent of the world's largest paging markets; ReFLEX(tm), the world's first two-way advanced wireless messaging protocol The rules, formats and functions for exchanging messages between the components of a messaging system. The most widely used messaging protocol is the Internet's Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).  which provides the foundation for the world's only commercial two-way messaging system for Narrowband PCS; and InFLEXion inflection, inflexion

(tm), the highest-speed wireless transport protocol for nationwide, regional and local voice and data messaging.

Advanced Signal, Inc. was formed in December of 1993 with the purpose of designing and selling specialized test equipment for the paging and Narrowband PCS markets. In addition to SIGNALpro, other products include a two-way Paging System Re-transmission Mapping program for analyzing return channel effectiveness; a Closed Loop System Test Software program that generates simulated paging traffic and test pages; and SURVEILLANCEpro(tm), a monitoring device for law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). . Their products are currently being used throughout the world by equipment manufacturers and paging service providers who are implementing the FLEX family of protocols.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include paging and data communications, cellular telephone, two-way radio, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics, and computers. Communications devices, computers and millions of other products are powered by Motorola semiconductors. Motorola's 1995 sales were $27 billion. -0-
