Advanced Visual Systems launches new GeoSpatial Products Group; New business unit to provide world-class development tools to rapidly expanding earth visualization market.

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1996--Advanced Visual Systems Inc. (AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside ) today launched the GeoSpatial Products Group to address the visual application development needs of geospatial System Integrators (SIs), Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), and Value Added Resellers (VARs).

The new business unit will extend the company's leading position in providing development environments for building complex 3D earth visualization applications.

The GeoSpatial Products Group provides software, technical support, training and consulting services specific to the needs of geospatial application developers, environmental scientists, petroleum specialists, and system integrators in industries such as federal government research, telecommunications, environmental research, and oil and gas exploration.

Advanced Visual Systems: The Leading 3D Visualization Player in the GIS Market

"This new business unit ensures that we have the tools our customers need to develop geospatial applications quickly and efficiently," says Scott Sandall, Manager of the GeoSpatial Products Group. "AVS is well positioned to capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on`

the fundamental changes in the GIS market." These changes are primarily due to new sources of relatively inexpensive data now becoming available from the earth imaging community along with the advent of relatively low-cost, high-resolution ortho-rectified imagery from satellites. "For example, two-dimensional satellite images texture mapped onto three-dimensional terrain data are quickly becoming the new geographic framework."

The company's visualization products-AVS/Express(R), AVS(TM), Toolmaster(TM), and Gsharp(TM)-are already used by leading geospatial research organizations and developers. "AVS' Geospatial Products Group is consistent with the evolution of geoprocessing away from monolithic systems toward tools and interoperable software components that enable more widespread and flexible use of geographic information systems," says David Schell, president of the Open GIS Consortium.

"Advanced Visual Systems has been involved in the OpenGIS(TM) technical specification process almost from the beginning because they saw how their visualization software would, with the right standard geoprocessing interfaces, layer on top of geospatial databases and geoprocessing software to enable developers to give users a much richer set of geographic visualization capabilities. The OpenGIS Specification ushers in an era in which digital geographic information will become much more available, which creates a market for software that leverages people's inherent ability to visualize the world as a collection of maps and aerial views."

AVS/Express: Accelerates and Eases Geospatial Application Development

Advanced Visual Systems software products provide a visual programming environment to radically reduce application development time and allow anyone, from scientists to software developers to end-users, to convert data from a variety of sources into insightful, interactive 2D and 3D earth visualizations.

) in Boulder, Colorado, a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), is using AVS/Express to develop software for high-powered, information-packed weather forecasting workstations of the future. "The system we've developed with AVS/Express allows us to actually get into the weather," says Philip McDonald, a research associate at the FSL. "For example, we can take virtual flights around hurricanes and through clouds to sample wind speed and moisture and can soar across the United States and see the weather graphically displayed on our computer screens." Wind-speed data, for example, renders a "sausage-shaped object hovering over the United States," says McDonald, who adds that "without the visualization capabilities from Advanced Visual Systems, this development effort would have taken many more months of research and development time and money. AVS/Express has helped jump-start this entire effort."

"One of the benefits AVS/Express gives us is a common architecture in which most of our code is developed," said Tony Rye, Director of the Image Analysis Group of the GEC-Marconi Research Centre in the United Kingdom. "This promotes reuse and has brought some order into the code so that now even a small study can use modules developed anywhere." Since many GEC-Marconi clients are researchers and specialists in their fields, rather than software programmers, "the AVS/Express visual development environment is very important," said Rye. "Advanced Visual Systems has provided an ideal tool to support the rapid prototyping and the evaluation of analysis schemes. It is then relatively simple to export a customized system to our customers."
