Advanced Visual Systems Inc. Upgrades Flagship Product, AVS/Express 5.0.WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 1999-- Customer Feedback Drives New Features to Add Performance and Breadth of Functionality Advanced Visual Systems Inc. (AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside ), the premiere global provider of data visualization See information visualization. technology, today announced a new release of its flagship product A primary product of a company, which is typically why the company was founded and/or what made it well known. For example, MS-DOS, Windows and the Microsoft Office suite have been flagship products of Microsoft. CorelDRAW is a flagship product of Corel Corporation. , AVS/Express(R) 5.0. This new version supports the latest operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. and platforms and includes newly developed Surface Reduction Modules. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK DRIVES DEVELOPMENT Upgrades to additional platforms as well as the development of Surface Reduction Modules is a direct result of customer feedback. AVS/Express now supports the following platforms: Solaris 7.0, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. 4.3.1, SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment. 6.5 N64, Windows 98 and VC++ 6.0. AVS/Express has been Y2K compliant Capable of correctly processing any data that deals with a date beyond the year 1999. See Y2K problem. since its previous release and this release assures that it is delivered on operating systems that are all also Y2K compliant as tested and confirmed by the respective vendors. Additional improvements to AVS/Express 5.0 include an upgrade to its database kit to support Oracle 8, the ability to normalize/scale/center a view for just the visible objects and a redesigned integration with Microsoft Developer Studio. "AVS' customers were instrumental to the development to AVS/Express 5.0," said Russ Barbour, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of Advanced Visual Systems Inc. "We have an open channel of communication with customers in many different industries so that we continually fine tune our solution and maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction." STATE-OF-THE-ART SURFACE REDUCTION MODULES BOOST PERFORMANCE By generating displays with less data, the new Surface Reduction Modules in AVS/Express 5.0 boost performance. These modules perform controlled, high quality reduction with a quantifiable error measure. It also includes secondary mesh data in constrained decimation DECIMATION. The punishment of every tenth soldier by lot, was, among the Romans, called decimation. to ensure that gradients in the data space are not lost. AVS developed state-of-the-art surface reduction modules as a strategic visualization tool. The development was partially funded by a European Commission (EC) project and tested in close collaboration with end user partners such as British Aerospace, DaimlerChrysler, and Unilever. These tools provide flexibility, performance, quality and unique data dependent support. The EC project provided the necessary end user environment for testing these modules with large and real data. AVS provides a surface reduction tool to allow both efficient time and memory, and high quality simplification, which can be tuned and customized, for a wide range of applications. The unique data dependent technology means that data associated to the geometry, such as colors or normals is consistently maintained during the simplification process. For instance, color changes can be "protected" against simplification, even if the geometry should normally be simplified. The simplified model will keep facets with different colors even if these facets should normally be merged according to geometry criterion. Data associated to the geometry can also be used to weight the level of simplification. AVAILABILITY AND PRICING AVS/Express 5.0 is available immediately.
