Advanced Tissue Sciences begins trials for periodontal treatment, heart tissue patch.


Advanced Tissue Sciences (ATS), La Jolla, CA announced it has begun 2 trials - one in tissue used in periodontal surgery, and a second with a tissue-engineered product to treat damaged heart tissue.

In early July the company received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA FDA

) to begin a pivotal clinical trial for the use of its core technology, a human fibroblast-derived dermal dermal /der·mal/ (der´mal) pertaining to the dermis or to the skin.

 substitute, as a substitute for a soft tissue graft during periodontal surgery. The FDA has already granted ATS approval to use the product in the treatment of diabetic food ulcers under the name of Dermagraft.
