Subject to the successful completion of the beta tests, ATG plans to sign a Master Purchase Agreement with Astral Point that could result in up to $25 million in purchases of the ON 5000 Optical Services Node.

ATG is part of a new breed of telecommunications companies known as Integrated Communications Providers (ICP (1) (Internet Cache Protocol) A protocol used by one proxy server to query another for a cached Web page without having to go to the Internet to retrieve it. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the  Astral Point's ON 5000 Optical Services Node. ON 5000 is a multi-service optical transmission platform that brings cost-effective scalability and provisioning ease to metropolitan access networks.

"Astral Point has demonstrated a unique and compelling approach to meeting the needs of ICPs," said ATG's Curt Wheeling, senior vice president and chief technology officer. "We are looking to Astral Point to enable us to rapidly respond to our customers' exploding bandwidth requirements Bandwidth requirements (communications)

"With ON 5000, Astral Point has demonstrated its ability to develop a cost-effective, DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

"Astral Point's initial product offering also has benefit to ILECs and IXCs customers by eliminating lengthy planning cycles, dynamic scaling within huge networks, and robust management and restoration capabilities."

ATG intends to build an easily scalable, fast-provisioning metropolitan optical transport network with the Astral Point ON 5000. This will let ATG provision its portfolio of voice and data services over digital subscriber line See DSL.
