BTSNet is an information management network test bed designed to give Border Patrol field personnel connectivity and situational awareness Situation awareness or situational awareness [1] (SA) is the mental representation and understanding of objects, events, people, system states, interactions, environmental conditions, and other situation-specific factors affecting human performance in  in their rugged environment. The overarching BTSNet goal is to support Border Patrol operations in the field and deliver information crucial to the missions of all of the network's users, including field agents and officers, field stations, sector commands and control centers, and national level agencies. BTSNet will interface with local, state and national data sources and provide connectivity between field agents within a sector and between agents and field stations.

The BTSNet project consists of four functional areas, including data access, communications, and knowledge discovery, and field agent situational awareness. At the outset of the project, Advanced Technology Systems will support the introduction of the initial BTSNet pilot developed by DHS and apply its industry expertise to design, develop, integrate, and demonstrate the second phase of the project. The company's public safety practice will leverage its existing wireless criminal justice products to help BTSNet develop additional product software for personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile data terminals (MDTs), station operations, and sector operations.

Additionally, Advanced Technology Systems will investigate emerging technologies as the BTSNet program evolves and integrate these solutions into the wireless communications capability supporting our nation's homeland security.
