Reach New High-Mark In Capacity, Performance

Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:HIT), today introduced a new series of high-capacity, high-performance 2.5-in. disk drives, including one model with world-class capacity of 18.1 Gigabytes (GB) storage capacity.

Featuring enhanced Giant Magneto magneto: see generator.

Permanent-magnet alternating generator used mainly to produce electrical current for the ignition system in various types of internal-combustion engines, such as aircraft, marine, tractor, and motorcycle engines.
Resistive resistive /re·sis·tive/ (re-zis´tiv) pertaining to or characterized by resistance.  (GMR) heads and signal processing technology developed by Hitachi, the drives provide desktop computer performance for portables and compact systems requiring small, lightweight 2.5-in. drives.

Hitachi will begin sample shipments this month of four new drives in the DK23AA family; including three 9.5 mm height drives with capacities from 6 GB to 12 GB, and the 12.7 mm height, 18.1 GB capacity DK22AA-18 drive.

The new drives are the first Hitachi storage solutions to use MEEPRML MEEPRML Modified Enhanced Extended Partial Response/Maximum Likelihood (hard drives)  (Modified Extended Extended Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (storage) Partial Response Maximum Likelihood - (PRML) A method for converting the weak analog signal from the head of a magnetic disk drive into a digital signal. PRML attempts to correctly interpret even small changes in the analog signal, whereas peak detection relies on fixed ) read channels, supporting an areal recording density of 10.79 Gbit per sq. in.

Integration of new read channel components in this latest generation of Hitachi 2.5-in. drives continues a tradition of innovation maintained throughout Hitachi's 30-year history of leadership in the data storage industry.

This experience has fueled a doubling and redoubling of sales volumes in the last few years, as Hitachi broadened its scope from proprietary disk drives to include standard 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch models.

With recent increases in production capacity, Hitachi anticipates further increases in its market penetration Noun 1. market penetration - the extent to which a product is recognized and bought by customers in a particular market
penetration - the act of entering into or through something; "the penetration of upper management by women"
and sees the potential for integration of its 2.5-in. products into new types of compact electronics systems requiring high-capacity disk-based storage.

"Since entering the 2.5-in. disk drive market in 1993, Hitachi has used consistent technology innovation to build its share of the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  market and establish itself as a premier supplier to the portable computer industry," said Gary Galusha, vice president of hard disk drive sales and marketing for Hitachi America's Computer Division, Storage Products Group.

"Market leading manufacturers increasingly turn to Hitachi for disk drives that help to set them apart from the competition, and the desktop PC-equivalent capability of these new high-end drives meets that requirement."

The new 2.5-in. drives have a 4,200 RPM disc spin rate and achieve internal data transfer rates of 12.4 -- 20.6 MB/s. Average seek times are 12 ms, and the maximum drive to system data transfer rate is 66.6 MB/s (Ultra-DMA Mode 4) using the ATA-5 interface. Hitachi also developed new look ahead and write immediate cache algorithms This article is about general cache algorithms. For detailed algorithms specific to paging, see page replacement algorithm.

In computing, cache algorithms (also frequently called replacement algorithms or replacement policies
to increase typical data access performance.

The DK23AA series of drives are the second generation of Hitachi drives to use a Head Load/Unload mechanism. The proven performance of this mechanism enables Hitachi to increase the non-operating shock specification of the drives to 700 G.

The model identification, capacity and configuration of the four new drives is summarized below. -0-

OEM samples of the three 9.5 mm height drives are available now, and samples of the 18.1 GB drive will be available in September. Production shipments are scheduled to begin in the fourth calendar quarter of 1999.
