Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. and Optimay Join Forces to Bring Voice Recognition to GSM Phones.

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1998--Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. (ART) and Optimay GmbH, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, announced an alliance to bring ART's smARTspeak voice recognition technology to GSM cellular phones.

ART and Optimay will integrate ART's smARTspeak speech technology with Optimay's GSM Phase 2 Protocol Stack The set of protocols used in a communications network. A protocol stack is a prescribed hierarchy of software layers, starting from the application layer at the top (the source of the data being sent) to the data link layer at the bottom (transmitting the bits on the wire).  and Man Machine Interface (MMI (Man Machine Interface) See HMI.

ART's speech technology will bring the added safety and convenience of voice name dialing, voice digit dialing, and voice command and control to today's cellular phones.

"Voice dialing will revolutionize the handset design as the user is no longer restricted to the normal input via keypad A small keyboard or supplementary keyboard keys; for example, the keys on a calculator or the number/cursor cluster on a computer keyboard. The ART voice solution will be fully integrated in the Optimay software and Lucent's chips, providing a complete solution for voice recognition with GSM cellular phones.

"The smARTspeak engine's patent pending algorithm includes the capacity to isolate the sounds to be recognized from background noise. This ensures high recognition accuracy regardless of the types of background noise present," said Richard McCaskill, executive vice president and general manager of ART.

"This engine is ideal for speech recognition in the diverse mobile environments cellular phones are used in. ART is excited to be partnering with Optimay to bring this technology to the GSM market."

ART and Optimay expect to demonstrate the speech recognition technology on a demonstration platform at the GSM World Congress in Cannes in February.
