Advanced Picture-in-Picture Controller From Philips Semiconductors Puts Multiple Images in the Frame.SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1996--A highly advanced Picture-in-Picture (PIP) controller from Philips Semiconductors gives designers complete freedom to display as many as 16 PIPs on screen at once. The new IC, designated the SAB9076, meets the requirement of the increasing number of video applications in mid- to high-end TV sets, multimedia computers, view-phones and surveillance systems to display more than one live picture on the same screen. The SAB9076 also supports several picture-out-of-picture (POP) modes. Additional features include full-field freeze-frame and sub- titling modes, and the ability to scale PIPs horizontally and vertically for display on 4:3 or 16:9 format screens. "The SAB9076 has been designed specifically for the USA and Asia-Pacific markets, incorporating full 8-bit digitizing to ensure excellent picture quality," said Javed Tak, international product marketing manager for digital TV products. The SAB9076 operates in 60-Hz environments and incorporates on-chip A/D converters for two separate YUV The color encoding system used for analog television worldwide (NTSC, PAL and SECAM). It also has on-chip PLL PLL - phase-locked loop clock circuits to synchronize A/D A/D See advance-decline line (A/D). sampling to horizontal and vertical sync inputs for each channel. The video information, digitized to 8-bit resolution at a pixel rate of 13.5 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. to retain picture definition, is stored by the SAB9076 in 2 Mbytes of external VDRAM as 4:1:1 YUV data. When used stand-alone, the SAB9076's two input channels allow it to insert two live pictures into a video signal. However, by adding external PIP decoders such as Philips Semiconductors' TDA TDA Texas Department of Agriculture TDA Trade and Development Agency TDA Transportation Development Act TDA Tax Deferred Annuity (commonly known as TSA) TDA Tienda (Spanish: store) 8310, additional video sources can be multiplexed onto the SAB9076's input channels to fill all sixteen of the possible PIP locations for each channel. The SAB9076 features seventeen built-in PIP or POP modes which can be selected via simple I2C-bus commands. These include three different sizes of single-PIP derived from either input channel; a range of double-PIP, twin-PIP and multi-PIP modes; and three multi- POP modes. In addition, the SAB9076 can display either input channel as a full-screen, live or freeze-frame picture. More advanced I2C-bus programming allows users to define their own PIP modes. User-defined modes can contain as many as four PIP rows, with each row containing up to four separate PIPs. A separate set of PIPs can be defined for each input channel and the size and positioning of the PIPs can also be programmed. PIPs for each channel can be turned on or off and they can also be prioritized so that the PIPs from one channel automatically overlay those from the other channel. Virtually all the SAB9076's PIP modes handle interlaced Refers to a display system or image that uses interlacing and does not render contiguous lines one after the other. Four different horizontal and vertical scaling factors allow the aspect ratios of the PIPs to be adjusted for display on 4:3 or 16:9 format TV screens. Other programmable features include the color, brightness, positioning and on/off control of a background for the PIP displays, and the width and color of the border around each PIP. The SAB9076 is a 5-volt only device, packaged in a 100-lead quad flat pack. It typically consumes around 200 mA of supply current. Production volumes are available now.
