For the first quarter revenues totaled $1.9 million compared with $1.7 million reported in the first quarter of the prior year and up $200,000 from the fourth quarter of the prior year.  W. Ward, chairman of the board of Advanced Photonix, said, "Our first quarter performance continues to reflect the process of change which was initiated in the prior fiscal year. Volume and margins in the core business have improved and are a reflection of our commitment to achieve profitability while continuing to develop our proprietary Large Area Avalanche Photodiode Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are photodetectors that can be regarded as the semiconductor analog to photomultipliers. By applying a high reverse bias voltage (typically 100-200 V in silicon), APDs show an internal current gain effect (around 100) due to impact ionization (avalanche ."
