Advanced PCS base station front end unveiled by Illinois Superconductor Corporation at CTIA's Wireless '97 in San Francisco.

Live demonstrations at the ISCO Booth 3747 will be carried out for the duration of the trade show (March 3 - 5).

ISCO has recently completed pilot tests with a major PCS carrier and successfully met all the performance goals set by the operator.

The tests confirmed the ISCO RangeMaster(TM) PCS product's ability to extend significantly the range of the PCS uplink cell sites. This range extension can result in as much as a 25 percent reduction in the number of cell sites needed to provide complete coverage in uplink-limited PCS service areas.

"This range extension benefit can reduce infrastructure capital investment for PCS operators without sacrificing quality or capacity, and can accelerate the build out of their networks," said Ted Laves, executive vice president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

of Illinois Superconductor. "The next step in the RangeMaster PCS program is to demonstrate the product benefits in operational PCS cell sites."

The RangeMaster PCS front end initial tests have verified 2 to 4 decibel decibel (dĕs`əbĕl', –bəl), abbr. dB, unit used to measure the loudness of sound. It is one tenth of a bel (named for A. G. Bell), but the larger unit is rarely used.  noise figure improvements over conventional base station front ends. These noise figure improvements can mean up to a 25 percent reduction in the number of sites required for coverage. This increased range allows carriers the freedom to select less-than-optimum site locations while still maintaining network call quality. In addition, the 2 to 4 decibel improvement in the front end noise is particularly beneficial to PCS service providers using CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  (Code Division Multiple Access). CDMA's precise power control can take advantage of a lower noise figure by reducing portable handset transmit power, allowing both increased range and increased capacity. Lastly, lower noise and better adjacent band rejection can improve uplink call quality and in-building penetration. RangeMaster PCS field trials with operators will be conducted throughout early Spring 1997.

"For the carriers, RangeMaster PCS opens the door to secondary locations and allows less-than-optimum geographic sites to be considered," said Jim DeBelina, Illinois Superconductor's vice president of Sales and Marketing. "Thus avoiding build-out delays caused by zoning and NIMBY NIM·BY
