Jack Nelson, chairman and chief executive of Advanced NMR Systems Inc. and Advanced Mammography Inc. commented: "We believe the Aurora system will become an important alternative for diagnosing breast disease. Initial evaluations of the system's capabilities at UTMB will include identification of abnormalities in dense breast tissue where x-ray mammography is inadequate, detection of breast implant leakage and follow-up testing of post-surgical and post-radiation cancer patients where scarring or radiation necrosis can prevent an adequate baseline examination to monitor for recurring lesions. It is estimated that about five million patients annually in the U.S. require a more advanced diagnostic breast imaging that conventional x-ray mammography to optimize treatment of their disease."

Sandra Rhoden, M.D., UTMB director of breast imaging in the department of radiology, said: "We anticipate the new MRI system will have a meaningful impact on our evaluation of certain patients, in large part because of its availability in our Breast Imaging Center. Our acquisition of the Aurora MRI system, in addition to the other tools we have today, will allow us to better manage patient care and outcomes."

Advanced Mammography Systems is negotiating with other major medical facilities for additional Aurora beta site installations.

Home of Texas' first medical school, founded in 1891, UTMB today consists of four schools, two institutes, seven hospitals and outpatient clinics. Occupying 86 acres on Galveston Island's east end, UTMB currently enrolls more than 1,800 students, employs 9,750 faculty and staff members, has awarded more than 19,000 degrees in the health science professions and lists physical assets in excess of $1 billion.

Advanced NMR Systems develops and manufactures ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging technology for clinical applications and advanced research and is a provider of diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation services through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Medical Diagnostics Inc. The company is developing other components and systems for emergency room head trauma, functional neuro-imaging and orthopedic applications.
