Center at Phelps Hospital in Tarrytown, N.Y., marking the company's first clinical site in the northeast United States.

Installation of the InstaScan system at Phelps will be completed by the end of August.

Acquisition of the InstaScan system by Phelps also marks the initial clinical application of stroke detection protocols established in a collaboration between Advanced NMR Systems Inc. and Massachusetts General Hospital Massachusetts General Hospital Health care The major teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School, widely regarded as one of the best health care centers in the world  (MGH MGH Massachusetts General Hospital

) in Boston, where research into what is increasingly called "brain attack" has been underway for some time. MGH is refining MRI techniques used to diagnose and improve the management and treatment of acute stroke patients with InstaScan which facilitates early detection of stroke through its ability to dramatically reduce the time required to perform an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), noninvasive diagnostic technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to produce cross-sectional images of organs and other internal body structures. ) study from 20 to 30 minutes on average to under one minute.

According to Dr. Andre Khoury, director of the MRI Center at Phelps Hospital, "InstaScan can identify a stroke in progress and assess its character in sufficient detail to enable us to provide significantly more effective patient management. We are optimistic that diagnosis and treatment of acute cerebral ischemia using InstaScan technology will result in substantially improved outcomes for our patients, as well as lower treatment costs."

Robert Kwolyk, ANMR's vice president of sales and marketing commented: "The sale of InstaScan in an influential clinical setting in the important northeast market is a milestone in ANMR's commercialization of this product."

Early intervention with thrombolytic therapies, appropriate in approximately 50 percent of stroke cases, can save brain tissue from permanent damage and has the potential of saving billions of dollars annually in rehabilitation costs. Stroke is the leading cause of permanent disability and the third most common cause of death among adults in the United States.

Advanced NMR Systems Inc. develops and manufactures ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging technology for clinical applications and advanced research. The company is developing other components and systems for emergency room head trauma, functional neuro-imaging and orthopedic applications. There are currently more than 30 InstaScan installations in the United States, South America, Europe and Japan. ANMR's majority-owned subsidiary, Advanced Mammography Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: MAMO) has completed a prototype of its dedicated MR Breast Imaging System and is currently negotiating with medical facilities for its installation.
