Advanced Digital Breast Cancer Detection Technology Certified in Canada.

Business Editors/Health & Medical Writers

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2002

CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF RADIOLOGISTS CERTIFIES

GE SENOGRAPHE(R) 2000D MAMMOGRAPHY mammography, diagnostic procedure that uses low-dose X rays to detect abnormalities in the breasts. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  SYSTEM

The Canadian Association of Radiology (CAR) certified GE Medical Systems' Senographe(R) 2000D full-field digital mammography digital mammography Imaging The capture of mammographic images on a digital grid Pros ↑ resolution and clarity than conventional mammography; DM is of use as a screening technique, and allows faster, earlier, and more accurate detection of early breast  system, a major step forward that will help increase access to new breast cancer detection technology for thousands of women.

It is estimated that two out of 19 women in the country are expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute of Canada. In addition, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer for women in Canada.

Developed by GE Medical Systems, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE NYSE

:GE), the GE Senographe 2000D full-field digital mammography system is revolutionizing patient care by reducing patient exam time by half, allowing medical institutions to provide screening for a larger number of patients.

The GE digital technology displays high quality patient breast images in seconds, providing technologists with quick verification of correct patient positioning. As a result, the number of patient callbacks and related patient anxiety is significantly reduced.

Analogous to digital camera technology, GE Medical Systems' digital mammography system allows physicians to electronically send and adjust images with the ability to zoom in, magnify mag·ni·fy

and concentrate on different parts of the breast tissue. The Senographe 2000D also provides better visibility of the breast, including areas near the skin line and the chest wall, as well as in women with dense breast tissue

Commenting on the announcement, CAR chief executive officer Normand Laberge said, this digital mammography technology is a critical step in the fight against breast cancer. "Members of the Canadian Association of Radiology are excited about the improved quality of images this leading-edge digital breast care technology offers. We want Canadian governments and healthcare providers to take notice of this advancement and the potential to improve the management of breast cancer disease," Laberge said.

It is documented that health care institutions and their patients worldwide prefer full-field digital mammography. In fact, more than 20 research papers documenting preference, benefits and future applications of the GE Senographe 2000D were presented at the Radiological Society of North America The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), founded in 1915, has the purpose to "promote and develop the highest standards of radiology and related sciences through education and research".  (RSNA RSNA Radiological Society of North America, Inc.

"This approval is a major development because it not only opens access to more patients in Canada, but it also opens the door to other important mammography advancements," said Samantha Allison, General Manager for Women's Healthcare for GE Medical Systems.

For example, Digital Computer Aided Detection (CAD) is a sophisticated system, like a spell check option on a personal computer, that automatically highlights areas of a patient's breast image that a physician should further review. Digital Computer Aided Detection is now available in Europe and GE Medical executives anticipate that the technology will be in use with the Senographe 2000D in Canada later this year.

GE Medical Systems first introduced the Senographe 2000D full-field digital mammography system in Canada in October 1999. GE Medical now has more than 275 systems installed worldwide. In two years after its debut, the GE Senographe has imaged more than one million women in more than 20 countries. GE estimates that more than 500 Senographe 2000D systems will be in use at more than 400 hospitals and medical institutions worldwide by the end of 2002.

Specifically in Canada, there are five Senographe 2000D systems currently installed. Those sites include: University Hospital Network's Princess Margaret Hospital There are several Princess Margaret Hospitals :
