Advanced Computer Communications announces Shannon -- a PCMCIA ISDN terminal adapter for fast remote access.SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1996--Advanced Computer Communications Inc. (ACC See adaptive cruise control. ), a leading provider of network access solutions for the home, office, and enterprise, Monday introduced Shannon -- an ISDN terminal adapter A device that adapts a computer to a digital ISDN line. Like a modem, it plugs into the serial port of the computer or into an expansion slot. Some terminal adapters use the parallel port for higher speed. in a PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. Basic Rate Interface (BRI) line. Shannon has an ISDN BRI port that allows remote users to communicate with the corporate backbone, peer workstations, or the Internet without requiring any additional equipment. Emulating a COM port, Shannon integrates with TCP/IP TCP/IP in full Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol Standard Internet communications protocols that allow digital computers to communicate over long distances. and PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using applications, such as Windows 95, to provide high-speed access. This product can also be utilized in remote communications servers which support the PCMCIA form factor. In these environments, network managers can support both asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. Shannon is available with either an S/T or U interface and supports ISDN BRI connections to AT&T 5ESS Customer and National ISDN-1 switches, as well as Euro-ISDN, TPH TPH Transplacental hemorrhage (Australia), and JATE JATE Jack and Kate (TV show Lost) JATE Joint Air Transport Establishment (UK) JATE Japan Approvals Institute for Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (Japan). The North America version also provides auto-detection of ISDN switch type. "With Shannon, telecommuters and Internet users can establish a remote connection, download an entire document, and shut down the line in the same amount of time it typically takes a fast modem just to bring up the connection," said Lisa Aviani, ACC product manager. "We are providing users with the speed of digital communications in a convenient PCMCIA form factor backed by ACC quality and experience." Configuration and Installation Has Never Been Easier The key to bringing ISDN access to the telecommuter and Internet user is ease of use. In addition to supporting the standard AT command set with ISDN extensions, Shannon comes with ACC's unique configuration interface, Web Wizard (shipped free of charge). With Web Wizard, users of all levels can easily configure Shannon in a matter of minutes A Matter of Minutes is an episode from the television series The New Twilight Zone. Cast
Running on the user's PC, Web Wizard is an independent application using a World Wide Web Browser interface. Drawings and photographs guide the user through complete installation, configuration and connection to the ISDN network. In addition, Web Wizard provides optional tutorials on ISDN technology as well as, "How to Order your ISDN Service from your Service Provider." The entire process can be accomplished within minutes -- all without opening a manual. In addition, on-line documentation in HTML format is provided. Pricing and Availability Shannon with the S/T interface is available for $495 (U.S.) and with the U interface for $595 (U.S.). The product beings shipment in August 1996.
