Advanced Circuits Goes Lead-Free on All PCB Prototypes.

AURORA, Colo. -- Advanced Circuits, the country's leading source for quick-turn printed circuit boards Same as printed circuit printed circuit, electric circuit in which the conducting paths connecting circuit components are affixed to a flat, insulating base board. The base is typically of plastic, glass, ceramic, or some other dielectric, and the conducting paths may be placed on it by a variety of methods. board., today announced that all prototypes will now be fabricated using lead-free solder Pronounced "sod-er." A metal alloy used to bond other metals together. Tin and lead are used in "soft" solders, which melt rather easily. The more tin, the harder the solder, and the higher the temperature required. Copper and zinc are used in "hard" soldering, or brazing, which requires considerably more heat to melt. See braze, reflow and wave soldering. as a plating finish. The lead-free HAL finish provides an enhanced solderable finish for assembly and meets all legislation requirements for the European Union's RoHS Directive six months ahead of the July deadline.

"Advanced Circuits is one of a limited number of PCB manufacturers in the USA offering a complete lead-free solder alternative," said Tony Garramone, corporate training manager at Advanced Circuits. "We strive to stay ahead of the curve and provide our customers with the most current technology. Any printed circuit board that we produce whether prototype or production is free of mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls polybrominated biphenyl or PBB, any of a group of organic compounds used as a fire retardant. In 1973 several thousand pounds of PBB were accidentally mixed with livestock feed that was later distributed to farms in W central Michigan. Some 1.5 million chickens, 30,000 cattle, 5,900 swine, and 1,470 sheep that became contaminated with PBB before the mistake was discovered had to be destroyed. or polybrominated diphenyl diphenyl /di·phen·yl/ (di-fen´il) a toxic compound comprising two linked benzene rings, used as a fungistat in containers for shipping citrus fruits.

Benefits of Advanced Circuits lead-free solder:

--A lead-free finish at no additional cost

--Processing at or near temperatures used for leaded solder application

--Flatter pad surfaces than leaded solder

--Compatibility with lead-free solder alloys and leaded solder used in assembly

Advanced Circuits' lead-free boards are produced using a lead-free alloy of 99.3 percent tin and 0.6 percent copper with a trace of nickel (SN100CL). This solder offers an excellent alternative to more expensive lead-free finishes.

Advanced Circuits is also stocking a variety of higher temperature laminates for use in conjunction with the lead-free solder finishes which are designed to withstand processing temperatures between 260 degrees and 288 degrees C, depending on the laminate system the designer chooses.
