Adopt Euro - union leader.

North trade union leader, Kevin Curran, has backed calls for the public to have their say on the Euro.

He has joined with other influential union figures to send a letter to Tony Blair urging him to hold a referendum on the Euro by next Spring. The letter also warns the delay threatens jobs.

In the letter ahead of Monday's Government news on the timing of any referendum, the union officials said adopting the single currency would help deliver a strong economy. To rule it out for the life of this Parliament would be a victory for the anti-European scaremongers and would sacrifice British influence in Brussels.

The letter was signed by Mr Curran, the new general secretary of the GMB GMB (in Britain) General, Municipal and Boilermakers (Trade Union) , former TUC TUC (in Britain and South Africa) Trades Union Congress
