Adobe Systems rebrands Aldus PageMaker; Adobe PageMaker 5.0 to be bundled with PageTools and Adobe Type On Call.
While the functionality -- and version number -- of the product remain unchanged, Adobe PageMaker 5.0 combines the Macintosh and Power Macintosh versions for the first time, providing users the choice of which version to install. Additionally, Adobe PageMaker offers more than $6,000 extra value through a limited time bundle with PageTools software, 220 free Adobe fonts, and other Adobe products and information.
"With PageMaker part of the Adobe product family, we are able to offer our customers a complete graphics and publishing solution," said Mike Peronto, vice president, print publishing products.
Concurrent with the rebranding, Adobe will bundle PageMaker software with Extensis Corp.'s PageTools program through June 30, 1995. PageTools is a collection of 10 utilities designed to extend Adobe PageMaker software's functionality on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms by adding a customizable toolbar as well as page preview, navigation and printing tools. In addition, PageTools for Windows offers a multiple-object resizing utility and an icon-based scripting function, while the Macintosh version provides floating rulers and a magnifying glass with 800 percent magnification.
Recognized as an essential utility by industry experts, PageTools has been lauded for increasing the productivity of Adobe PageMaker users at all levels. Retail priced at $129, PageTools will be bundled with both the Macintosh and Windows version of Adobe PageMaker.
Adobe Type On Call with 220 Free Typefaces
For extra value, Adobe PageMaker 5.0 will also include Adobe Type On Call Version 4.0, a locked CD-ROM that contains 2,000 typefaces for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. When users register their Type On Call CD, they can unlock at no charge 220 of Adobe's Type 1 typefaces, a $5,500 value. Thereafter, customers can unlock additional single typefaces at the regular price of $25 per face.
Adobe PageMaker CD-ROM
The release of Adobe PageMaker 5.0 marks the first time that the product will be available via the CD-ROM medium. In addition to Adobe PageMaker, the CD includes other Adobe products and product information as well as technical support and educational files.
"Whether someone is upgrading from an earlier version or buying PageMaker for the first time, the combination of PageMaker 5.0, PageTools, 220 fonts and the additional CD-ROM content represents an unprecedented value," said Lori Birtley, senior product marketing manager.
Products on the CD-ROM include: Macintosh and Windows versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which enables users to view documents stored in Portable Document Format (PDF), TrapMaker, an expert-quality trapping addition for PageMaker software for the Macintosh; and CheckList, a product for the Macintosh platform that checks publications for printer settings, font usage, style sheets and linked graphics files.
Educational files on the CD contain valuable information to help users maximize their productivity with Adobe PageMaker. The PageMaker Scripting Guide offers instruction on how to write scripts to automate PageMaker tasks. The CD also contains Adobe's "Straight Talk" papers, which address a wide range of technical issues in desktop publishing and design. In addition, articles from Adobe Magazine are included to offer useful PageMaker program tips and tricks.
The most commonly asked technical support questions are answered in the technical support section on the CD-ROM. Also included is a free graphical user interface client for the Adobe bulletin board service, where customers can download product and technical information.
