 Scitex's U.S. Patent No. 5,113,249 ("the '249 patent") and Adobe's U.S. Patent No. 5,295,236 ("the '236 patent"), which was acquired by Adobe as part of its acquisition of Aldus Corporation.

Both patents relate to trapping technology useful in color page editing.

In February 1994, Scitex brought an action against Aldus Corporation. The Scitex action, which has been pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington The United States District Court for the Western District of Washington is the Federal district court whose jurisdiction comprises the following counties: Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit,  at Seattle, alleges that Aldus is infringing the '249 patent. In April 1994, prior to the acquisition of Aldus by Adobe, Aldus brought an action against Scitex. The Aldus action, which has also been pending in the District Court in Seattle, alleges that Scitex is infringing the '236 patent.

Under the settlement, each party will grant to the other immunity from suit in respect of certain patents for a specified period. Scitex and Adobe both will continue to offer their full lines of products and services.
