Approximately 1,500 companies vied for a place on the "100 Best Companies to Work For" list. Using a 57-question survey created by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, FORTUNE polled up to 400 randomly selected employees at each of the 446 U.S.-based companies considered for the list. Employee survey responses counted as two-thirds of each company's score. To determine the ranking, survey scores were coupled with an evaluation of each company's demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and criteria such as: credibility (communication to employees); respect (opportunities and benefits); fairness (compensation, diversity); and pride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations).
