Since its inception in 1999, the Inner City 100 has become a national movement with the support of over 100 mayors, more than a thousand community, civic, academic and business leaders, as well as thousands of inner-city businesses and organizations. Every year, close to a thousand of the above said leaders from across the country gather at the Inner City 100 Awards Dinner to celebrate the recognized companies.

To qualify for the Inner City 100, a company must:

--Be an independent for-profit corporation A for-profit corporation is a corporation that is intended to operate a business which will return a profit to the owners. A for-profit corporation, depending on the jurisdiction to which it is incorporated, may be operated either as a stock corporation or as a non-stock , partnership, or proprietorship

--Be headquartered in or have 51% or more of its physical operations in an economically distressed inner city area

--Have at least 10 employees

--Have a five-year operating sales history that includes at least six months of sales in the first year of consideration, and increase in year five sales over year four sales, and fifth-year sales of at least $1 million
