Last week, Adaptec announced that it had acquired Trillium Research, a leading Macintosh developer of RAID software. Yesterday, the company announced the AHA-2940W for Power Macintosh, a SCSI SCSI

"Adaptec's goal is to extend our leading I/O capabilities across all important CISC- and RISC-based platforms," said Grant Saviers, president and COO of Adaptec. "Our products meet the demanding I/O requirements for high-performance desktop computers, technical workstations and enterprise servers."

Adaptec's strategy is to integrate Trillium's Remus software and the AHA-2940W for Power Macintosh SCSI accelerator into a comprehensive RAID solution for the Macintosh. With this acquisition, Adaptec becomes the only company in the Macintosh market that provides software-based RAID levels 4 and 5.

"The acquisition of Trillium represents a major strategic win for Adaptec because they are the only company in the Macintosh RAID market with a flexible and low-cost implementation of RAID," said John Hamm John Frederick Hamm, MLA, MD (born April 8, 1938) is a Canadian physician and politician and was the 31st premier of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Trillium Research of Hudson, Wisconsin was co-founded by president Dennys Bisogno, in 1992. Remus software is a cost-effective solution that brings users of RAID systems flexibility and ease of use. Remus is marketed primarily to users of digital video systems, high-end desktop publishing and multimedia authoring and development systems.

"We are extremely excited about the new development and reseller opportunities that Adaptec's acquisition of Trillium will bring to our customers," said Dennys Bisogno, president of Trillium Research.

The market for low-cost RAID systems is rapidly expanding, and as the leading software developer, Trillium is well-positioned to take advantage of the growth.

There are two primary markets for Macintosh RAID systems: digital video systems that are replacing traditional offline video editing systems, and pre-press and desktop publishing. Both markets are experiencing growth rates Growth Rates

that exceed 60% for RAID systems. A typical RAID system consists of a SCSI controller hardware device, RAID software and at least two SCSI hard disk drives.

Trillium's management and development team will remain in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Adaptec plans to begin offering Macintosh RAID products in August 1995.
