Speed Small Parts Packaging and Handling Systems

Adept Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADTK), a leading supplier of factory automation products, today announced an alliance with ABB Flexible Automation Inc. to jointly market high speed small parts packaging and handling solutions for the food and consumer products industries.

The partnership will leverage Adept's motion control and vision guidance products including AdeptMotion VME (Virtual Machine Environment) An operating system from Fujitsu Services (formerly ICL) that runs on its Series 39 mainframes. Introduced in 1975, VME is a comprehensive product that provides a variety of utilities for datacenter operations.  controllers and AdeptVision VXL VXL Voxel (volume pixels)

systems, and ABB's new FlexPicker robot, a high-speed picker robot, to develop a new flexible product packaging and handling solution.

"This strategic partnership will give manufacturers a faster, more efficient,

and more flexible packaging solution," said Charlie Duncheon, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Adept Technology. "AdeptVision and motion controls combined with ABB's FlexPicker will be able to handle 120 picks per minute corresponding to a cycle time of 0.5 seconds, faster than any conventional system on today's market."

Under the partnership Adept will offer ABB and Adept integrators the state-of-the-art AdeptVision VXL guidance system and AdeptMotion VME controllers that when combined with ABB's FlexPicker robot will deliver a revolutionary high-speed packaging and material handling solution. Adept Technology has been a world leader in guidance vision and robot control Robot control is the theory of how to model and control robots.

A simplistic model of a robot is to view it as a collection of links connected by joints.
 for over fifteen years.

The AdeptVision VXL vision system is the quickest, most robust machine guidance vision system on the market. It includes the grayscale In computing, a grayscale or greyscale digital image is an image in which the value of each pixel is a single sample. Displayed images of this sort are typically composed of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest, though in  patent pending ObjectFinder(TM) vision tool optimized for robot guidance and flexible feeding applications. ObjectFinder is the only vision tool able to locate overlapping or partially out-of-view parts, with full 360 degree rotation on moving conveyors.

AdeptMotion VME controllers offer advanced motion features combined with machine vision, conveyor tracking, force sensing, and AdeptWindows PC software. Kinematic kin·e·mat·ics

modules allow simple programming of complex mechanisms while supporting tool offsets, world coordinates, and other advanced robot functions. Multiple robots can be coordinated from one controller. All AdeptMotion controls support Adept's most advanced options including AIM, vision, and force.

The FlexPicker, the world's fastest pick and place robot, was designed to solve the problem of monotonous picking and packing tasks for a wide range of products. It can accurately place products at thousands of parts per minute and is ideal for any application requiring pick and place speed and accuracy.
