A suction device for withdrawing milk from the breast.

breast pump Pediatrics A tubular mechanical device that provides gentle suction for milk extraction, used when breasts are engorged or when direct
before the baby arrives. Almost every woman I have worked with has benefited from having a pump--even a manual style--to help with engorgement engorgement /en·gorge·ment/ (en-gorj´ment)

on. For those mothers able to use an electric pump, these are great for maintaining milk supply when morn goes back to work, and storing excess milk when the baby is young for use later on.

* Write a birth plan!!! There are lots of websites out there now for writing a birth plan. No mother I work with privately goes into her birth without one. And even though things could go very differently than planned, it is a good communication tool with the doctors and nurses at the hospital, and it is a great learning tool for the morn regarding all of her birth options and interventions.

* Think positively, believe in yourself, and relax. Women are designed to have babies. Ninety percent of the time women labor without complications. Research has also shown that women who expect the pain of labor to be moderate are less likely to use pain medication, while women who expect the pain of labor to be severe more often choose medication. The power of the mind is an incredible thing.

* Keep active everyday, like taking a walk, but don't forget to rest when you come home.

* Talk to your baby in-utero, perhaps writing down the things you say or drawing pictures in a special journal.

* Have a Blessingway with close women friends and ask one of them to organize a list of people willing to cook and bring food after the baby's birth, so for at least one to two weeks the new parents won't have to worry about dinners.

I always suggest that my clients have a plan, outline the things that they feel are important in the birth process, and then be willing to be flexible, as things rarely go as planned and anything can happen in the process.

* Address your fears and release them. Fear, conscious and unconscious unconscious, in psychology, that aspect of mental life that is separate from immediate consciousness and is not subject to recall at will. Sigmund Freud regarded the unconscious as a submerged but vast portion of the mind.  alike, is a primary factor in perceived negative birth outcomes.

* Relax, surrender your body, and let birth happen. Tension and resistance work in opposition to what your body does naturally.

* Trust yourself, trust your body, TRUST BIRTH. You are perfectly designed to create a life and perfectly designed to bring that child into the world. You CAN do it.
