Additives Heavyweight Pursues Antimicrobials.

Ciba Specialty Chemicals is a chemical company based in and near Basel, Switzerland. It was formed as the non-pharmaceuticals elements of Novartis were spun out in 1997, following the merger in the
, Tarrytown, N.Y. Ciba is now taking a more direct role in marketing its broad-spectrum organic biocide biocide (bī`əsīd'), synonym for pesticide.  to plastics processors. Ciba has made triclosan in Germany for over 30 years, supplying it under the name Irgosan DP300 to compounders of antimicrobial concentrates--e.g., Microban from Microban Products Co., Huntersville, N.C., and Bacticlean from Allied Resinous Products, Inc., Conneaut, Ohio. Triclosan has been effective in HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS, PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

Ciba renamed its 100%-active triclosan powder Irgaguard B 1000 and is preparing to introduce its first concentrates. One is LDPE-based Irgaguard B 1110 and another is B 13120 in an engineering-resin carrier. Also in development is a non-triclosan product, Irgaguard A 2000.
