As Chief Engineer, he was deputy to the vice president of engineering and maintenance. In 1956, Baltensweiler became a member of Swissair's management team and headed the Planning Services Division. Promoted to Deputy President four years later, he was responsible for evaluating and introducing new aircraft, as well as dealing with operations and personnel. Baltensweiler became president of Swissair in 1972 and managing director in 1977. Baltensweiler's personal example of motivation and dedication to the airline was reflected at all levels throughout the company. He has encouraged younger managers by delegating responsibility, as well as stressing the importance of training. As Swissair's chairman since 1982, Baltensweiler has played a major role in promoting close relations between Swissair and governmental authorities, industry and the media. He has led the international airline industry in facing the challenges of environmental concerns, currency concerns, and airline security.
