We know that two 18-year-old men, Anthony Spates and Everett Jamison, stood in the parking lot outside a credit union in Frayser, Tennessee, with guns drawn on October 13. They were spotted by Roscoe McVay, a man who sold fruit from a stand in the parking lot on Fridays. From that point in the story, however, accounts of the incident vary.

 McVay pulled a gun and shot one of the robbers in the neck, sending both men fleeing.

In a later account in the same paper, it was reported that McVay had entered the credit union ahead of the robbers to warn the employees and was then "confronted by the two masked gunmen in the doorway as he was leaving." Whatever the exact circumstances, police located the two robbers nearby, behind Spates' house where Spates was attempting to render first aid to the injured in·jure
