Adaptive Broadband to Demonstrate New Point-to-Point Digital Radios at IWCE Show.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1999--

Adaptive Broadband Corporation (Nasdaq/NMS:ADAP ADAP AIDS Drug Assistance Program
ADAP Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program
ADAP Agricultural Development in the American Pacific
ADAP Autodiscovery/Autopurge
ADAP Airport Development Aid Program
ADAP Advanced Digital Antenna Production
) announced today the first five radios in its new AB-Infrastructure Series (AB-IS) of point-to-point microwave radios. These radios will be on display at the 23rd Annual International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE IWCE International Workshop on Computational Electronics ) in Las Vegas on April 28 to 30.

The AB-Infrastucture Series features a variety of industry-leading satellite and terrestrial radio products for private and public networks. The latest additions to this series, the MDS MDS,

and the MDS 1400F/S, provide longhaul digital microwave radios supporting capacities from 64 Kbps up to 4xE1. These new systems operate in the 400, 900 and 1400 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  bands and offer advanced spectral efficiency providing 4xE1 transport in a mere 1.75 MHz of spectral bandwidth.

Advanced Feature Set for Private Infrastructure and Telecommunications Markets

AB-IS radios feature advanced network management and reliability features as part of the standard offering. Each radio contains an orderwire, a data service channel, multiple alarm I/O ports and Ethernet connectivity. Both local and remote performance monitoring can be managed from either radio in a link. Element and network management is supported through a fully integrated SNMP agent, allowing the radios to be managed as a stand-alone network, or fully integrated into existing Network Management Systems (NMS See NetWare Management System. ). The AB-IS family incorporates advanced digital modems with forward error correction A communications technique that can correct bad data on the receiving end. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it.  (FEC See forward error correction.

) for high data integrity and integral adaptive equalizer to minimize multipath propagation effects. Protected options allow both space and frequency diversity configuration to provide enhanced availability over difficult transmission paths.

These features provide the reliability, robust network management and ease-of-installation that telecommunication companies and private infrastructure builders require. By coupling these features with exceptional spectral efficiency and flexible data rates, Adaptive Broadband now provides network builders with the ability to quickly deploy reliable long haul facilities for access or backhaul applications.

Advanced Design Means Price/Performance Leadership

According to George Arena, vice president of product development and operations at Adaptive Broadband, "The MDS 400 and MDS 1400 radios provide a cost effective, complete solution to a wide variety of point-to-point radio applications. Their introduction marks a significant leap forward in performance, distance, manageability and spectral efficiency. We expect network architects will greatly value these advances."
