It is an affluent residential community and health resort. , Calif., have agreed to co-market a solution that will allow service providers to quickly and cost-effectively deliver integrated voice and data services over wireless ATM connections to small and medium-size businesses.

The solution combines the use of Adaptive Broadband's new AB-Access(TM) wireless data networking equipment with Jetstream's CPX-1000 Voice Gateway and Integrated Access Devices (IADs). By leveraging ATM, which was designed for the integration of voice and data services, the solution is capable of delivering local telephone service with voice quality identical to traditional wireline service.

Since both companies' solutions already utilize the same robust transport architecture, they can presently be used together on a "plug and play" basis to provide the convergence of video, voice and data services over a single wireless data connection.

Broadband at 25 Mbps

Adaptive Broadband introduced AB-Access wireless data networking equipment earlier this year for ultra high speed Internet access See how to access the Internet. . It bridges the last mile, replacing the local loop for business and residential subscribers. AB-Access offers data transmission at rates up to 25 Mbps, a speed up to 400 times faster than dial-up service with a 56K modem. At this bandwidth, users can transmit voice, download full-streaming video, download data files, use real-time video conferencing See videoconferencing.

and surf the Worldwide Web - all at the same time over a single connection. Initial product offerings are in both licensed (MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service or Microwave Multipoint Distribution Service) A digital wireless transmission system that works in the 2.2-2.4 GHz range. ) and unlicensed (U-NII U-NII Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (bandwith for wireless LAN Networks by FCC 5.15-5.35 GHz and 5.75-5.825 GHz) ) bands to support the varying needs of different types of service providers. Future product releases at several frequency bands between 2 and 42 GHz are planned, made possible because of the frequency-independent platform architecture of the product.

Market Growth in U-NII Band

"This application of wireless voice-over-ATM technology further validates the market for broadband wireless communication," said Todd D. Carothers, director of AB-Access products for Adaptive Broadband. "Based on feedback from our customers, we project wireless broadband High-speed wireless transmission of data. What is "high" speed is always a changing number. Wireless systems are typically slower than land-based, wireline networks. In the past, wireless broadband started at 250 Kbps, whereas land-based broadband was generally considered to start at T1  access to become a $100-billion worldwide business. And it has become clear that voice-over applications will be a key market driver."

Carothers said initial applications of AB-access are in the U-NII band. "Interest in this band is quickly increasing," he said. "Demand for wireless broadband communication is ramping up, but applications in the regulated MMDS band have been delayed as the industry awaits further FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  action to finalize two-way transmission capability there. Meanwhile, the U-NII band is available today for two-way transmission, giving both large and small carriers the opportunity to do business immediately."

Adaptive Broadband has announced two contracts during the past 13 weeks for application of its AB-Access data networking equipment, both for Internet access in the U-NII band. "Based on what our customers are telling us, we believe the U-NII band represents a $10-billion potential market in this country for wireless data networking equipment," Carothers said.

"This latest breakthrough in wireless voice-over technology is a significant win for competitive service providers," said David Frankel David Frankel (born April 2, 1959, New York City, New York) is an American director, screenwriter, executive producer. "One of the biggest challenges these carriers face is finding access technology that allows them to cost-effectively deliver integrated voice and data services to new subscribers. We can now provide them with a powerful new broadband access solution to quickly and profitably reach whole new subscriber groups."
