Adaptec releases Remus Disk Array Software Version 1.4; Only software for Macs to support RAID 0, 1, 4 & 5.MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1996--Adaptec will announce its newest version of Remus and Remus Lite RAID disk array software at MacWorld Expo in Boston. Remus manages SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. drive arrays as if they are a single, high-performance storage subsystem The part of a computer system that provides the storage. It includes the controller and disk drives. See storage system. . It also speeds the performance of disk-intensive applications like desktop publishing desktop publishing, system for producing printed materials that consists of a personal computer or computer workstation, a high-resolution printer (usually a laser printer), and a computer program that allows the user to select from a variety of type fonts and sizes, , image processing image processing Set of computational techniques for analyzing, enhancing, compressing, and reconstructing images. Its main components are importing, in which an image is captured through scanning or digital photography; analysis and manipulation of the image, accomplished and digital video. New features in Remus 1.4 include support for removable drives. With the removable array support, Remus users will be able to create RAID and non-RAID partitions on their favorite removable storage media (Iomega, Pinnacle, SyQuest, etc.) and not worry about accidentally ejecting a device and losing data. This feature also allows users to integrate multiple removable arrays. In addition, this new version of Remus will increase the current 4-Gbyte partition limit to 2-TBytes on PCI-based Macs, expanding the use of Remus in larger-format disk arrays. The 2-TByte partition capability will simplify desktop storage management for large-scale storage users. For digital video professionals, this means that users can put substantially more storage into fewer volumes onto the desktop. How Remus Works Remus software speeds data throughput by striping Interleaving or multiplexing data to increase speed. See disk striping. striping - data striping data across multiple hard drives, so data moves faster to and from disk, significantly improving response time. It also protects critical data by utilizing redundant disks. Remus configures a SCSI RAID subsystem, so users can ensure that if a drive fails no data is lost and access continues without disruption. Remus also performs rebuilds of degraded arrays in the background, further eliminating user down time. Using the Remus graphical interface, a user can simply point and click to the drives in the disk array to monitor and report drive status. Remus software is the leading Macintosh RAID software package available today. It currently is used by leading VARs and OEMs such as MegaDrive, StreamLogic, Pinnacle Micro and LaCie. There are two versions of Remus disk array software: Remus Lite supports RAID levels 0 and 1 and Remus supports RAID levels 0, 1, 4 or 5. Remus and Remus Lite will carry a suggested retail price of $449 and $295, respectively. They will be available in September 1996.
