The certificate recognizes Adaptec's commitment to clean, green manufacturing processes, and was awarded for Adaptec's use of a no-clean process used in PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl.

PCBs are the boards onto which electronic components are mounted. Worldwide industry standards demand that PCBs be free of residue and dirt to prevent performance degradation and to maintain product lifespans. Most manufacturers of PCBs clean the boards with chemicals containing chlorofluorocarbons chlorofluorocarbons (klōr'əflr`əkär'bənz, klôr'–) (CFCs), organic compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms.  (CFCs), which deplete the ozone layer that protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

In 1991, Adaptec developed and improved its no-clean technique, which reduces residue and cleans the boards without using CFC CFC

chemicals and without jeopardizing board quality. Adaptec's no-clean process was implemented in early 1992 and in 1994 Adaptec sought certification of its process from SISIR.

"We are pleased to be the first American electronics manufacturing facility in Singapore to achieve this award," noted F. Grant Saviers, president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

of Adaptec Inc. "Adaptec is proud to produce quality products that satisfy the needs of our customers and our environment and we are always seeking new ways to improve upon our manufacturing processes."

"Adaptec's no-clean process meets all our requirements for ODS-free manufacturing," said Dr. Loh Wah Sing, deputy director of SISIR. "I am certain the fine example set by Adaptec will encourage more electronic companies in Singapore to be environmentally responsible."

In early 1992, Adaptec received ISO (1) See ISO speed.
