It usually includes the ability to import and export video, cut and paste sections of a video clip, and add special effects and transitions; and it sometimes includes the . These products will give video enthusiasts and professionals the ability to transfer DV format video and audio from a 1394-enabled digital VCR or DV camcorder, over the 1394 Firewire bus and into a PC or Macintosh system for editing with a standard software application (such as Adobe Premiere).

Once editing is complete, the finished video can then be transferred back over the 1394 Firewire bus and re-recorded to a DV device. This entirely digital video system preserves A/V (1) (Audio/Video) Refers to equipment and applications that deal with sound and sight. The A/V world includes microphones, tape recorders, audio mixers, still and video cameras, film projectors, slide projectors, VCRs, CD and DVD players/recorders, amplifiers and  synchronization and digital video quality by eliminating the degradation which results from successive generations of analog recordings. In short, the companies are providing DV video editing systems with Betacam-quality at a fraction of today's cost.

"By partnering with a company that is known for its quality digital video editing systems and industry leadership, Adaptec is demonstrating its commitment to driving this market and meeting the demands of video professionals," said S. "As a part of our strategy to keep bringing complete, high-quality solutions to the video editing and animation markets, this agreement is a giant step in our plans to provide DV format video editing solutions to our customers. Adaptec was the first to deliver a Firewire-to-PCI adapter and we want to be the first to bring Firewire to the video editing world," stated Rui Luis, president of DPS.

1394 Firewire technology is a critical step in providing digital connections for peripherals to computer systems. The IEEE-1394 digital technology delivers a fast and constant stream of data over thin, flexible cables of up to four and one-half meters and can connect up to 63 devices. These features make 1394 Firewire one of the most attractive technologies for the convergence of the personal computer with consumer electronics.
