Adaptec Meets Portable Market's Need for Speed; New CardBus Product Brings 20MB/Sec Performance to Portable Computing.MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1997--Adaptec has announced development of a new product that will run peripherals connected to portable computers up to 10 times faster than current technology allows. This new CardBus-to-SCSI product will give laptop users the UltraSCSI performance that was previously available only on desktops. Today's PC Card interface with its 2MB/sec limit, constrains the newest high speed peripherals, such as Iomega removable drives, to run at less than their maximum rated speeds. Using the new PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. industry standard CardBus interface, Adaptec's CardBus product takes advantage of the 32-bit bus, higher data transfer rates, and bus mastering to deliver 20MB/sec using UltraSCSI hard drives and allows other devices to run at their maximum rated speeds. In addition to improved data transfer rates, the CardBus-to-SCSI adapter also dramatically lowers CPU CPU in full central processing unit Principal component of a digital computer, composed of a control unit, an instruction-decoding unit, and an arithmetic-logic unit. utilization which can increase overall system performance. Lower CPU utilization is especially important for CPU intensive applications such as video or mastering CDs with CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. . "Many business people today are trading in their desktop PCs for the flexibility and convenience of portable PCs," said Faye Pairman, general manager for the Portable Products Group. "Our goal is to provide connectivity and performance so these portables can truly be the performance equals of their desktop counterparts." Pricing and Availability The CardBus-to-SCSI adapter will be available directly from Adaptec to OEMs the first quarter of this year, with retail distribution to follow in the summer. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and sample pricing for single unit quantity is estimated to be around $200.
