Adaptec Launches ``RAID Everywhere'' Initiative to Fuel RAID Growth.

"RAID Everywhere" Strategy Represents Industry's Most Aggressive

Move Toward Making RAID Technology Available to More Users

Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADPT ADPT Automated Data Processing/Telecommunications

), the global leader in innovative storage solutions, today announced "RAID Everywhere," an initiative to accelerate RAID into mainstream PC servers and high-end PCs for business-critical data protection and performance. The announcement included the unveiling of three powerful microprocessor-based Ultra160 SCSI SCSI

"More than 75 percent of today's whitebox servers, and nearly half of all PC servers shipped today, don't have adequate RAID protection -- that's an alarming statistic statistic,

," said Jeff Loebbaka, vice president of channel marketing at Adaptec. "Critical data exists in businesses of every size, yet the benefits of RAID have simply not been widely available, due to cost, complexity or support issues. The goal of `RAID Everywhere' is to put RAID on every server and make it as ubiquitous Found in large quantities everywhere. This English word means "all over the place."  as SCSI."

Expanding the Adoption of RAID...

Adaptec's "RAID Everywhere" initiative focuses on three major areas: technology, compatibility and support. Adaptec has simplified installation and support with new easy-to-use management software tools and 24x7 global customer care, and is developing new ways to extend the adoption of RAID in the marketplace, from offering a rich breadth of solutions, to educating the market on the latest technology developments and applications.

Among the new offerings Adaptec announced today are two robust 64-bit Ultra160 SCSI RAID controllers A disk controller card that supports one or more RAID configurations. Originally only for SCSI drives, RAID controllers have become very popular for PATA and SATA drives. See RAID. , the Adaptec SCSI RAID 3200S and 3400S, that feature a 3/4-size form factor, and come in two- and four-channel versions, respectively. Adaptec also introduced the SCSI RAID 2100S, a half-size, single channel Ultra160 RAID controller.

With these additions to its product portfolio, Adaptec now delivers the most complete line of RAID products in the industry, from entry- to high-end server offerings, and the broadest choice of interfaces, including ATA/UDMA, SCSI and Fibre Channel.

Meeting Customers' Needs...

"Adaptec's RAID solutions are tailored to meet customer needs, from low-cost servers using UDMA/ATA, to high-end SCSI- and Fibre Channel-based servers and RAID subsystems," said Loebbaka. "Our complete line of RAID products offers the highest level of performance, fault-tolerance, compatibility and reliability in the industry."

Adaptec has long been committed to developing and delivering robust and affordable RAID solutions to the market. The company's pioneering RAIDPort RAID-on-Motherboard (ROMB (RAID On the MotherBoard) Refers to RAID circuits built on the motherboard rather than a plug-in host adapter. ROMB saves a PCI slot and improves speed because it is not using a shared bus. See ROC and RAID. ) technology made RAID widely affordable, and its AAA-UDMA RAID card brought RAID 5 functionality to entry-level servers. Adaptec's acquisition of Maitland, Fla.-based Distributed Processing The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system. It started with the first minicomputers. Today, distributed processing is called "distributed computing." See also client/server.  Technology (DPT) last year helped the company broaden its product portfolio to include microprocessor-based RAID products, giving customers more choices for using RAID to protect their critical data.

Future phases of Adaptec's "RAID Everywhere" initiative will continue to focus on reducing the cost of RAID to end-users, advancing the technology and making RAID easier to use. RAID developments will be applied across new storage fabrics including Fibre Channel, EtherStorage, PCI-X (PCI eXtended) An enhanced PCI bus technology originally developed by IBM, HP and Compaq that is backward compatible with existing PCI cards. PCI and 32-bit PCI-X slots are physically the same, and PCI cards can plug into PCI-X slots.  and Infiniband. The company also plans to increase interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  testing to include up to $2.8 million in new equipment and a 50 percent increase in test-against systems and configurations this year. Technical support will also be enhanced with the launch of new Adaptec reseller An organization that sells hardware and software to the general public. Resellers purchase products from software publishers and hardware manufacturers.  educational programs on RAID later this year.
