Adaptec Joins Fibre Alliance.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2000

Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADPT ADPT Automated Data Processing/Telecommunications
ADPT Adaptec Corporation (stock symbol)
ADPT Adaptive Prediction
ADPT Auger Depth Profiling Technique
ADPT Automated Data Processing Telecommunications
ADPT Adapter
) the global leader in innovative storage solutions, announced today that it has joined the Fibre Alliance, an open industry association driving the development and implementation of standards for managing heterogeneous Fibre Channel-based storage area networks (SANs).

"As Adaptec executes its plan to be the leading supplier of Fibre Channel to the fast-growing PC server marketplace, creating interoperable SAN management solutions will be key," said Jim Comstock, vice president of marketing for Adaptec's Storage Networking Solutions group. "Adaptec is demonstrating its commitment to driving SAN interoperability by joining the Fibre Alliance."

Don Swatik, vice president of strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  at EMC Corporation EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) is an American Fortune 500 and S&P 500 manufacturer of software and systems for information management and storage. It is headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA. , which sponsors the FibreAlliance, said, "Today, in announcing its membership in the FibreAlliance, Adaptec clearly is demonstrating its commitment to heterogeneous SAN interoperability. As more and more customer-focused companies such as Adaptec join the FibreAlliance, the SAN industry moves one step closer to a goal shared by all open SAN vendors -- providing customers with SAN management solutions based on open industry standards."

Adaptec began shipping its first Fibre Channel host bus adapters to Hewlett-Packard last month. The company is planning additional product announcements later this year. Adaptec's Fibre Channel host bus adapters are targeted at PC server OEMs and resellers.

The work of the FibreAlliance has resulted in an engineering specification for building interoperable SAN management capabilities based on a management information base, or MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. . The MIB enables users to collect and display SAN device information and launch each device's management tools, such as configuration and control utilities. This capability provides a common method for managing multiple devices across a heterogeneous storage network. The MIB is the underlying technology for implementing a single, comprehensive storage management console A terminal or workstation used to monitor and control a network. See Microsoft Management Console.  from which storage administrators can quickly and easily monitor and manage the entire SAN topology.

The FibreAlliance has submitted the results of its work to the Internet Engineering Task Force (c/o Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), Reston, VA, www.ietf.org) Founded in 1986, the IETF is a non-membership, open, voluntary standards organization dedicated to identifying problems and opportunities in IP data networks and proposing technical solutions to the  (IETF See Internet Engineering Task Force.

Adaptec and Agilent Technologies are partnering to tailor Fibre Channel solutions for worldwide PC server OEMs and resellers. Agilent offers Tachyon tachyon (tăk`ēŏn'), hypothetical elementary particle that travels only at speeds exceeding that of light. According to the theory of relativity, the speed of light is the limiting velocity for all ordinary material particles.  ICs, host adapters and software, the newest of which provides two gigabit per second throughput for high-performance, enterprise-class SANs. Adaptec builds Tachyon-based host adapters, and provides drivers and SAN management software backed by a strong sales, distribution, service and support infrastructure to help customers implement Fibre Channel in demanding, PC server computing environments.
