MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2000

AAA-UDMA RAID Card Addresses Needs of Small Businesses and

Workgroups Where Protecting Valuable Data is Paramount Yet Cost is

a Major Concern

Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADPT ADPT Automated Data Processing/Telecommunications
ADPT Adaptec Corporation (stock symbol)
ADPT Adaptive Prediction
ADPT Auger Depth Profiling Technique
ADPT Automated Data Processing Telecommunications

), the global leader in innovative storage solutions, is now shipping the Adaptec AAA-UDMA RAID Card, a true hardware-based fault tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  RAID solution for small businesses and workgroups deploying low-cost servers using UDMA/ATA drives.

Previously, the only alternatives for this cost sensitive market were to rely on a UDMA (Ultra DMA) See Ultra ATA.

"Lost data and server downtime The time during which a computer is not functioning due to hardware, operating system or application program failure.  are extremely costly, whether you're a small business or a Fortune 500 company," said Jeff Loebbaka, Adaptec's vice president of worldwide channel and corporate marketing. "Adaptec is now able to address the need for data protection on UDMA/ATA servers, just as we provide robust data protection for environments using SCSI SCSI

 and Fibre Channel storage solutions."

The AAA-UDMA RAID Card raises the bar for hardware RAID protection on low cost servers as it is the first UDMA/ATA RAID card for entry-level servers and workstations that supports RAID level 5, the most efficient and preferred RAID level for business critical server applications. Up until now, RAID level 5 has only been available for more expensive mid- and enterprise-level servers. RAID level 5 distributes parity information among each drive in the array in such a way that the data can be reconstructed on the fly in the event of a drive failure without bringing the server down.

(Triple A) A common single-cell battery used in a myriad of electronic devices of all variety. Like its double A (AA) cousin, it provides 1.5 volts of DC power. When used in series, the voltage is multiplied.
UDMA RAID Card offers many of the same robust fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

(architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy.

2.
features found in Adaptec's industry leading AAA and ARO SCSI-based RAID cards, which command the leading market share in the distribution channel. At the same time, by supporting inexpensive UDMA/ATA drives it keeps the cost of the overall solution low.

In addition, the AAA UDMA RAID Card includes the same Adaptec CI/O Management Software that ships with Adaptec's AAA and ARO SCSI-based RAID cards. This management software goes far beyond the basic features of software RAID, providing sophisticated remote management capabilities, the ability to protect the operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
as well as applications and files, and the ability to configure a hot spare to automatically take over for a failed drive. All of Adaptec's AAA and ARO cards, including the new UDMA RAID card, undergo rigorous compatibility testing Compatibility testing, part of software non-functional tests, is testing conducted on the application to evaluate the application's compatibility with the computing environment.  with hundreds of systems and peripherals.

With the introduction of the AAA UDMA RAID Card, Adaptec now addresses the broad spectrum of the RAID market ranging from solutions for the lowest cost entry-level servers on up to Ultra160 SCSI and Fibre Channel RAID for the most demanding enterprise-level server environments. All Adaptec RAID cards are backed by the same quality, reliability, compatibility and leading edge technical support customers have come to expect from Adaptec.

Pricing and Availability

The AAA UDMA RAID Card is available as a kit that includes cables, manuals and software, and is designed for the user requiring an all-in-one RAID solution. The Adaptec AAA-UDMA RAID Card is shipping now at an MSRP MSRP Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price

About RAID

The acronym acronym: see abbreviation.

A word typically made up of the first letters of two or more words; for example, BASIC stands for "Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.
"RAID" stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or "Independent") Disks. RAID is a method of combining several disk drives into a single logical storage unit. RAID provides real-time data Real-time data denotes information that is delivered immediately after collection. There is no delay in the timeliness of the information provided.

Some uses of this term confuse it with the term dynamic data.
recovery when a disk drive fails, increasing system uptime and network availability. RAID also increases system performance when multiple drives work together. To learn more about Adaptec's RAID solutions refer to http://www.adaptec.com/gotraid.com
